While on a short vacation to celebrate New Year’s with some friends this year, my 41 year old husband had a massive heart attack and died.  Just 4 days shy of his 42nd birthday.  Our 2 daughters and I were absolutely devastated.  Chris’ death was like a massive earthquake that turned our world upside down and inside out, and we were left to deal with the multiple, continuous aftershocks.  Our family lost our leader who took care of everything, our social director, and our personal comedian.  I lost my best friend, my soul-mate, and my heart.  Our girls lost their father, their role-model, and their friend.

Was this preventable?  We may never know.  20% of all cardiovascular disease is not preventable.  We need to change that, and for our children’s sake, I hope we can.   There is definitely still more work to be done.

Help us make a difference.  Join me in helping to support the Winston-Salem Heart Ball!

Did you know that every day, this world loses 2,400 moms, dads, children, and friends to heart disease and stroke? This means, within the next year, 865,000 families will lose someone they love.n Along with our volunteers, advocates and supporters, the American Heart Association is working tirelessly to create a foundation for a culture of health. Imagine if the healthy choice was the easy choice? Imagine if we lived in a world where every corner store had healthy, fresh options? This could change our future. This could be the change that finally rids our world of the 80%: the 80% that is preventable, the 80% that is controlled by diet and exercise, the 80% that continues to take loved ones from their families.

Join the American Heart Association as we remember those who have lost a loved one and honor those who have fought to become healthier.
