I'm so honored—and excited—to be chairing the first-ever Guilford County Go Red For Women Luncheon and Expo! This is an opportunity to share the facts about heart disease with all Guilford County women—and to help them improve their own health, and the health of their families and friends.
Think about it: The Go Red For Women campaign will lead to a healthier Guilford County. That's powerful!
When I agreed to chair this important event and campaign, I had two requirements:
- Go Red For Women must be inclusive! Heart disease doesn't discriminate, and neither will we. Our goal is to empower women of all ages, races, faiths, neighborhoods, and backgrounds, and—by giving them the facts about heart disease and how to prevent it—to improve their health and the health of everyone in our community.
- Go Red For Women must be an ongoing, continuous campaign. Our Go Red Luncheon and Expo is an incredibly important event, but we must encourage women to take charge of their own heart-health every single day of the year! Heart disease can strike on any day...at any time. And women must have the tools to combat it.
I am involved with many important organizations and causes in Guilford County. I serve on the Boards of the Carolina Theatre, the Community Theatre of Greensboro, JDRF of the Piedmont Triad, NCCJ (the National Conference for Community and Justice), and Triad Health Project, and I also volunteer for the American Red Cross and the United Way of Greater Greensboro. These organizations and their missions are very near and dear to my heart (no pun intended).
But—as the mother of two daughters (22-year-old Sarah Rose and 20-year-old Emily)—Go Red For Women is of the utmost importance to me! The fact that one in three women across the US will die from heart disease is unacceptable! I refuse to let my daughters and me be felled by heart disease, when it is preventable 80% of the time.
I look forward to meeting you and Going Red together. Please feel free to e-mail me with any questions or suggestions for making our Guilford Go Red For Women Luncheon and Expo more inclusive.
Message From Nancy Brown
Dear Friends,
Welcome to the Guilford Go Red Luncheon! We’re delighted you are here and appreciate your interest in learning how you can advance health, stop heart disease and save women’s lives. That’s what the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women® movement is all about.
Heart disease isn’t just a man’s problem. It’s a woman’s problem, too. In fact, it’s the No. 1 killer of women. And, tragically, far too few women realize their risk from this preventable disease. We need to raise women’s awareness of their risk and protect our mothers, daughters, sisters, friends and ourselves.
You can help, starting today. Here’s how:
First, take charge of your own heart health. Visit your doctor. Know your numbers (learn more at www.GoRedForWomen.org). You can improve your blood pressure, cholesterol and other numbers by making lifestyle changes. You’ll be healthier and look and feel better, too.
Second, join the American Heart Association in making it your mission to fight heart disease in women. Help spread the word that heart disease is women’s No. 1 killer. Share what you learn today with your family and members of your community. Tell five women you want them to live and we can help stop heart disease in our lifetime.
Third and last, consider making a contribution. Your donation today will make a difference in the lives of women here and across the country. You can help fund local and national Go Red activities that support awareness, research, education and community programs that benefit women.
Thank you again for being here. My hope is that you won’t leave today without committing to making a difference by joining the Go Red For Women movement — women everywhere need your help. Only one in five women believes that heart disease is her greatest health threat. We believe reducing risk and preventing heart disease starts with education — and you. There’s so much to do, and so much at stake.
With your commitment, we can help women and their families live longer, stronger lives. Thank you for your generous support.
Warm regards,
Nancy Brown

I was born in 1978 (yes, I admit my age) with a congenital heart defect. Thanks to research supported by the American Heart Association I am alive today to raise money and awareness about heart disease in women. Yes, my heart disease started out differently than most women with heart disease in America, yet I face similar issues - the effects of treatments and medicines on my body, finding doctors who trust me and who I trust, and everyday life choices to be heart healthy. Without past supporters of the American Heart Association, I might not be here today. Without your support of the Go Red for Women campaign and the American Heart Association, one of your friends might not be here tomorrow. Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of American women. Your financial support enables education, awareness, and research for heart disease in women so that we can all have a better chance at tomorrow.
Join Amanda and Make it Your Mission to help in the fight against heart disease in women.
